According to a survey by the National Association of Transvestites and Transsexuals (Antra), carried out in conjunction with the Brazilian Trans Education Institute (IBTE), 163 trans people were murdered in the country last year. According to the report, the targets of these crimes vary in color and age: 97% are transvestites and trans women, 82% are black or mixed race and 60.5% are between 17 and 29 years old. Although the number of deaths in 2018 was lower than that recorded in 2017, when 179 cases occurred - the highest rate in 10 years -, there was an increase in the number of crimes not reported by the media. Around 30% of the 163 crimes committed last year were not reported in any media outlet. Antra states that it found news that only 15 cases had the suspects arrested, which represents 9% of cases.
