November 20th
Just like the fictional Wakanda, Palmares existed hidden among the palm trees of Serra da Barriga. In the heart of Brazil, this small community of escaped blacks prospered silently until it became so large and uncomfortable that it aroused the desire for destruction by the colonial power. Its most famous leader, Zumbi dos Palmares, died on November 20, 1695 after resisting Portuguese military power for more than a decade. But how did this guy, leader of a black community in the 17th century, become a symbol of anti-racist struggle for the black movements of the 20th and 21st centuries? With so many struggles, revolts, and leadership, why are Zumbi and Palmares still so significant today?
